Sheesham Wood
Amidst the desert landscapes of Rajasthan, India, lies Jodhpur, home to some of India's finest furniture and metal workers.
The carpentry and carving community in Jodhpur has a long and established tradition in these crafts. Once supported by royal patrons, they participated in the construction of temples and palaces.
This range is made exclusively in Jodhpur, using sheesham wood. Sheesham wood is often known as Indian Rosewood, it's a tough beautiful hardwood, which smoothes and finishes to a fine lustre with wax.
All the timber is obtained from government-managed plantations that ensure the wood gets replenished and therefore ensures sustainability. Sheesham wood is fast growing with a rate of 15 metres in ten years.
The producer operates under strict fair trade guidelines, offering healthcare and support to its workforce and their families. They are actively involved in a charitable foundation set up specifically to support and train women within the Jodhpur region and are also the sole benefactors of a school in the town which now has over 650 pupils.
