Earth Bags is based in Kolkata, India and specialises in bags made from jute, a sustainable material which is becoming increasingly popular as people search for alternatives to plastic bags. Earth Bags give employment to women and self-help groups in Kolkata and strives to help the environment by encouraging more people to use earth-friendly bags. It is not a recognised Fair Trade organisation, but goes out of its way to ensure that its wages and working conditions are excellent for all of its employees.

A bit about Jute

Jute is the second most important vegetable fibre after cotton and is a long, soft, shiny plant fibre that can be spun into coarse, strong threads. Its fibres are composed primarily of plant materials cellulose and lignin. The fact that is a source of cellulose means that it is quicker to grow.

Jute is 100% biodegradable and recyclable and thus extremely environmentally friendly. It grows best in warm, humid climates; India, Bangladesh and China are the main producers
