Handwoven Crafts
Handwoven Crafts makes hand woven scarves, which are woven by skilled craftsmen.
The best thing about these scarves is that during the full weaving process no electricity-operated machine is used, they are woven on the traditional handloom weaving wooden framework called " KHADDI". This craft uses both their hands and feet in sequence to complete one knit cycle.
The production process is controlled by Societies, which are registered with the Government of India. The Government encourages the setting up of Societies by providing land at very nominal rates. Raw yarn is first purchased by the Societies from the market and then distributed to women. These women start the production process by spinning the yarn on wooden spinning wheels called Charkha to make it suitable for weaving. The women in their houses do about 90% of the spinning after finishing their household work. The spun yarn is then brought back to the factory where the appointed engineers on the handlooms set it up. The handlooms have to be first adjusted and fixed according to the designs. Then it is the work of the craftsmen to turn the yarn into beautiful pieces.
The company is part of the sales wing of the Society; they do the marketing for the products and have been associated with the Society for the last 12 years. In total there are around 345 people involved.
All the members of the Society are committed to saving an ancient tradition and providing employment to people who have not been fortunate enough to receive good education. They provide work to womenfolk, who can earn some money while staying in their homes and taking care of the children and their home.
Free medical checkup camps are organised for the workers and their children, in this free medicines are also given. Primary level schools are run to provide education to the children.
