Nkuku
Nkuku was founded after a year travelling and meeting artisans around India and Africa, and witnessing their astounding skills but challenging living standards and restricted opportunities. Nkuku are a company that supports and raise awareness towards fair trade and local community initiatives. The name
‘Nkuku' was inspired by a village in Zambia. All their products are inspired by the traditional skills of artisans throughout Africa and India. They combine contemporary designs with traditional techniques, natural materials and sustainable methods of production to ensure each product is truly exceptional
and unique. They are a member of BAFTS, the British Association of Fair Trade Shops.
These rustic style photo frames are a very contemporary homeware product ideal for your home or as a gift. From the skillfully hand painted natural bone frame, made from a natural byproduct; to the antique finished, recycled wooden frames in various different woods, these frames will complement any photo. A new addition to our photo frame range this season, are these stunning recycled pewter frames. Handmade over in India, the surround of the frame is covered in elaborate paisley detailing; highlighting the stunning work of the Indian artisans. These stunning woolen cushions have been made from old woolen jumpers. The jumpers are collected together and mashed into a pulp, which is then left to dry. The woolen pulp can then be hand knitted into these fantastic recycled wool cushions, in the shades of slate grey and royal blue. To compliment these stunning cushions is this beautiful hand knitted recycled woolen throw. Another stunning throw this season is made out of Indian lamb's wool, this luxurious throw is the perfect snuggle comfort for this winter. Our stunning range of recycled mango wood bowls is perfect to bring out for snacks and nibbles, when entertaining this season. The large mango wood bowl has a softly grooved exterior which enhances the natural grain of the wood, and contrasts against the hand painted lacquer interior finish. The smaller mango wood bowls have a colourful lacquer finish to the exterior of the bowl which the inside exposing the natural beauty of the wood. The stunning range of lanterns are all made from 100% recycled glass. Although glass is one of the most harmless materials produced by the world, this is because it is essentially made of raw materials; it does not break down in landfill.
Nkuku maintain a close and personal relationship with all the artisans involved, and respect that they are very proud of their work and their beliefs. The producers are paid a decent wage for their work, with safe working conditions and an environment of a good standard. During the production process, no children are exploited. All their products are skillfully created in a positive and pleasant environment. Nkuku ensure that these codes of conduct and practice are met by making regular visits over to their producers in Africa and India.
