Peony Scarves
Peony was established back in 2003 by Kevin and Dana, who design their own range of exclusive hand crafted scarves. Peony work with PRADAN who are a non-government, non-profit making organization which introduces, promotes and develops economic activities within India's poor rural communities. PRADAN has identified the production of Tasar silk yarn as an activity that has the potential to generate a large number of livelihoods among the rural poor in the eastern and central Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh. India is the second largest producer of tasar silk. PRADAN has sought to separate Tasar yarn production from weaving, promoting it as an independent and viable enterprise for women.
Our fantastic ranges of premium Bandhini scarves are very desirable accessories suitable for any occasion. The Bandhini art has a very rich history; the word comes from the Hindi word "bandhan" which means to tie up. The Bandhini process is extremely long and tedious and involves tie dying pieces of silk. Through tying, various different shapes can be achieved like: dots, waves, stripes and squares. Firstly, the silk is washed then bleached so that it can absorb the dyes. The tying process is then carried out by hand, which is an intricate and complicated procedure on its own. The tied textiles are then hand dipped into natural dyes to achieve the chosen colour finish. This
process is repeated if there is more than one colour within the design. The scarves are then left to dry until they are ready to be untied to reveal the stunning pattern that has been created. The Bandhini process can take up to 3 days to complete by an experienced team of artisans.
Also, we have a range of cotton and linen which are all handmade by Indian artisans, which incorporate colourful patterns and techniques such as broad stripes, needle stitching and loose weaving.
