People Tree
People Tree was first founded in 1991 over in Japan by Safia Minney. The concept of People Tree is to work deep down through the roots, improving the lives and environment of the artisans and farmers in developing countries who work to produce their fashionable clothing. Since 1991, People Tree has launched in Tokoyo, the UK and across Europe whilst supporting artisans from India and Peru to Bangladesh and Kenya. Their organic cotton fibres have also been certified in India by the Control Union and the Soil Association.
In order to ensure People Tree meets the Fair Trade principles set out by IFAT (International Fair Trade Association), they work closely with 50 Fair Trade groups in 15 countries. That way, they can bring benefits to people and the planet at as many steps of the production process as possible: growing cotton, weaving, dyeing, embroidery, stitching etc. This then helps alleviate poverty in the world's most marginalised communities. People Tree also works hard to ensure that they pioneer ecologically sound methods of production and minimise environmental impact. Not only is most of their cotton certified organic and Fairtrade, all their baby clothing are dyed using safe and natural dyes. People Tree also source as many products as they can locally, choosing natural and recycled products over toxic, synthetic and non-biodegradable materials.
Assisi Garments is one of the first groups that People Tree worked with. Set up over in India by Franciscan nuns, it provides employment for deaf, mute and poor women who were considered unfit for marriage by their families. Assisi provides a haven for these women to live in and a safe and supportive working environment. They are paid a fair wage and a lump sum paid after five years of employment to start a home. Assisi Garments are the artisans behind our stunning range of finest quality Certified Organic baby clothing. Due to the support of People Tree, Assisi Garments have gone from an initial 5 members of staff to an unbelievable 150 members.
