Rice

Rice was founded back in 1998 by Charlotte, after the birth of her son. The initial idea behind Rice was so that Charlotte and her French husband Philippe could change their lives, escaping from the fast and hectic pull of their jobs in France, to enjoying a more quiet and relaxed lifestyle. Charlotte's Danish friend, Hans, was based over in Thailand and was already working with homeware products. After a very long discussion a partnership was created and Rice was born over in Denmark, selling beautiful
handmade crafts from Thailand and Madagascar. There is a team of 25 people currently working within Rice Denmark, who are the brains behind the products and control the designs and development processes. Rice Thailand employs 70 people and work alongside several local villages, who are the artisans behind the creation of these stunning products. Rice is now not only based in Denmark and Thailand, but also has bases in the UK, France, Spain, Norway, Austria, Sweden, Holland and India.

The name behind the company was created by Danish/Thai partner Hans. The idea being that rice is a basic
survival product for many Third World countries, which seemed suitable as the company was supporting artisans within Third World countries. Many of the artisans in Madagascar also receive a bag of rice as part of their salary package.

Rice does not tolerate child labour and ensure that all their craftsmen and women are treated properly, and are not discriminated in any way. For this reason, Rice has obtained the SA80000 certificate, which is a guarantee that they will always conduct themselves in a morally and socially responsible manner.
